Engagement Philosophy/Approach

All projects, including consulting engagements, are driven by three interdependent constraints on the scope of the project (i.e. the projects goals, deliverables and tasks). These constraints are time, cost and quality, often referred to as the project management triangle or simply the time-cost-quality triangle.

At Hexagon Innovating, our approach to managing the scope as well as the time-cost-quality constraints is distinct from most consultants. We operate under a set of integrated principles and policies, call it a philosophy, that is intended to provide a high level of value to the client in a fast, efficient and effective way while minimizing client risk and uncertainty.

The first step in an engagement is to work with the client to determine the full scope of the project. At this point, it is important that we determine whether we can provide significant value given our skills and expertise. This discussion is followed by the development of a clearly written scope statement that is both achievable and promises to deliver the desired value. Upon client sign-off, this document serves as the baseline for the project.

​With respect to project quality, Hexagon Innovating prides itself on five factors. In order to maximize value, we focus on being thorough. We go the extra mile to seek out sufficient information to ensure the findings and recommendations are solid. We also work with client staff in a facilitative matter as much as possible, having them lead the research and strategic discussions. This ensures that accurate and well-integrated solutions, staff buy-in, and knowledge transfer all result. Often this is complemented with in-house training in the methodologies employed. These activities go hand-in-hand with active communication, with the support of online tools like Slack and Evernote, and the associated consolidation of findings into formal reports. Again, these procedures help ensure the project meets and exceeds the client's requirements. Finally, to compliment the communications, we use a formal change management system, as it is not uncommon that a change in focus or even the total scope of a project is a better path after some preliminary work. We only want to complete the right project for clients so we accept change as a reality. 


At Hexagon Innovating, we manage time in a manner that complements our scope and quality principles. We prefer to break projects down into smaller milestone-based components and then work on each one with high intensity. In most cases, we work sequentially i.e. with only one client and project at a time. This dedicated focus ensures the goals and value are delivered promptly permitting the client to benefit as soon as possible. It does put an additional demand on the client to dedicate staff, but only for short intervals. Nevertheless, we have continually found this to be a more productive approach. Finally, to ensure the work is done efficiently and effectively, additional associates with complimentary expertise are brought in as required. 

Our pricing also compliments these principles. Hexagon Innovating works on a fixed fee basis, negotiated upfront, with no charge for small incidentals. Major travel costs if required and approved by the client are the exception and are billed at cost. If the client is not totally satisfied with the engagement, we offer a full money back guarantee on a milestone by milestone basis. On the flip side, our work is also bonusable, at the client’s discretion, when the delivered value exceeds expectations. This significantly minimizes client risk and uncertainty from a cost and value perspective.
